Meet Kate

I started my career in 2003 as part of a Johns Hopkins research lab, working as research assistant in the Center for Autism and Related Disorders. From there, I began my journey to being a speech language pathologist, graduating from Emerson College in 2007 with a masters in communication disorders. I began working in a sensory integration clinic, as one of two SLPs on a team of 40+ OTs. Interdisciplinary care quickly became a front a center component of my work. In 2008 found my way to Spaulding Rehab, working in an outpatient setting at the Lurie Center, a clinic specializing in autism spectrum and related disorders. It was here that I worked closely with medical teams and was trained in augmentative alternative communication (AAC). After my daughter was born in 2011 I launched my private practice, GTC Therapy, which is still in operation today.

After two years working exclusively in AAC primarily with non-speaking and minimally speaking complex learners, I quickly learned that behavior and communication go hand in hand. I started coursework in applied behavior analysis, officially becoming a BCBA in 2015. I spent the next 7 years as a solo-practitioner, consulting to schools and legal teams around complex cases, AAC, the integration of AAC into complex profiles, and collaborating with behavior teams.

In 2020, a conversation with a friend turned into a new business venture. We were tired of the barriers to quality continuing education and felt that the SLP industry desperately needed a fresh, easily accessible option for high quality evidence-based professional development. SLP Nerdcast was born - a podcast for ASHA CEUs. It provides one of a kind open access, high quality evidence based professional development for busy professionals who need to learn on the go. It quickly grew to 10k+ users over the course of the pandemic and continues to disrupt and push boundaries in the SLP CEU space.

In 2021 I hired my first employee, and together we spent the next several years growing GTC Therapy into a multi-location practice with several service lines and disciplines.

In 2023 my curiosity got the best of me, and with the encouragement of a dear friend and colleague I began the pursuit of my MBA and PhD through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. My research interests are leadership, organizational culture, and how aspects of industry impact patient care and professional experiences. I teach entrepreneurship at the graduate level and am passionate about supporting others in building businesses that support their communities.

I am passionate about people - especially patients and families who face barriers to quality care and clinicians working in poor conditions.

I am passionate about business, and feel strongly that culture and quality leadership is aligned with best practices and profits (the research agrees with me).
